Reflections on Ethics Discussion

Thom Dickson September 02, 2022

This blog post is a follow up to the in-class discussion about personal ethics.

The Discussion

In class, we each were given a section of time to present our moral ethics to the class. A lot of people took this and started attempting to present what is wrong and right, and others presented how they view determine their ethics/worldview. I always find the latter of the two to be a more fascinating conversation.

Two of the more interesting viewpoints presented were: a self-proclaimed positive-nihilist and another (actually a few IIRC) who followed social contract theory. Coming from a more concrete view of the world, I found that these were very interesting perspectives to discuss.

My Reflection on The Discussion

The big surprise to me walking away from everyone sharing their perspective on ethics was how many people seemed to believe in ethics only as a relative construct. As one of the very few in class who pulls my ethics from an absolute and authoritative source, this was a bit jarring. From my point of view, it just doesn't make sense to think of reality and ethics as a relative and fluid system.

Continue The Conversation

I don't think the handful of minutes we had to present our worldview was enough to fully communicate why and what we believe in. However, the brief conversations I had with my fellow classmates were very valuable. With that said, I find the topic of fundamental world views and ethics very fascinating, and I would love to discuss this more in depth with any of my classmates who are interested.
